Have you ever wondered about the interplay between your spine and your body?  Do you have muscle tension and backaches from time to time?  Ever wondered about your thoughts and their affects on your pain level?   I have been more and more curious about these issues over a number of years largely due to the care of my chiropractor, Miranda Kennedy.  I want to introduce her just a bit later, but first…. let me share how chiropractic has helped me to adjust my life.

I have always given chiropractic referrals for my patients with back and neck pain as well as headaches.  It has been a wonderful complementary therapy to aid in the healing process, and its effectiveness is well-known in the literature.  I began chiropractic care, myself, about 8 years ago when I developed persistent right hip pain.  This problem resolved completely with adjustments.  Over the years I have experienced 3 different adjustment methods and have settled into a method that seems to work best for me,  but I am finding that chiropractic is assisting me on a deeper and different level these days.  I am deepening my awareness of my physical body through chiropractic.  It is helping me to realize where I am storing my stress and negative feelings.  This has been extremely useful, as I carry it with me during my daily life.

One week at work I proudly believed that in spite of all the chaos and pressure I had, I was able to keep my calm and be effective in the workplace.  But when I went for an adjustment, I found that what I had actually done was to take all of that work tension and send it into the spine and the muscles surrounding the spine.  I was tight as could be and was only slightly aware of it.  That realization is helping me to adjust how I am responding to life!  As I become more aware of where tension is stored I can observe it and let my body take care of it.  Does it always help me to relax?? No!  Like many other people, I am simply on that path.

Now I want to introduce you to my local chiropractor, Dr. Kennedy from LaGrangeville, NY.  She has a technique that is gentle and painless but very effective.  She also has a warm, comforting and nurturing attitude that makes me feel like I have just stepped into an oasis from my daily life.  When I go for an adjustment, I feel immense gratitude for her care.

Here are some questions that I asked Dr Kennedy and her answers:

1.  How long have you been in practice and where did you receive your degree?

     I have been in practice for 13 years after receiving my doctorate in chiropractic from Life University in Atlanta, GA.  I completed an undergraduate degree in biology at SUNY New Paltz.

2.  What led you to choose chiropractic as your vocation?

     I was drawn to helping people.  I was good with my hands but didn’t want to deal with the blood and gore associated with medicine.  Halfway through my undergraduate degree I had an opportunity to help out in a chiropractic office and I thought, “Wow! People come here excited to see the doctor and leave feeling better.  It doesn’t get much better than this!”

3.  How can chiropractic help someone live a healthier life?

     Chiropractic is ALL about a healthier life.  As a chiropractor I am working with the central nervous system.  The brain and spinal cord control everything in the body, including every muscle, tissue and cell.  By removing interference to nerve flow the body is able to utilize its inherent ability to heal, and to be healthy.  This is truly a beautiful thing.

4.  How does this care reduce the stress response?

     There are so many different kinds of stress: physical, chemical, mental, and emotional.  Chiropractic care can help to reduce their effects by allowing the body to function optimally.  My adjustments specifically, are very relaxing.  I am often told by my patients that when I am done, they feel lighter, like a burden has been lifted.

5.  What are some things that patients need to tell you before an adjustment?

   The most important concerns are covered in the patient’s history prior to their first adjustment.  These include health issues, previous accidents, falls, broken bones, etc.

6.  What are some things that patients can do to enhance an adjustment?

     Movement is Life! This I have learned and have been told more times than I can recall.  Stretching before bed and when you awake in the morning is important.  Go to the gym, take a walk or just move.  I love yoga. Yoga does so many great things for a person’s mind, body and soul.  Drink more water!!!!

7.  What do you love about your work?

     The human body is absolutely amazing! I love feeling things move and release with the knowledge that I am a part of someone’s healing process. I am excited by the overworked Dad telling me that his whole family is happy that he is less grumpy because he is in less pain.  I love when my patients say, ‘I took pain killers for years but I haven’t had to take them lately’.  I love my patients!

8.  What is unique or different about how you perform adjustments?

     My adjustments are very gentle.  My technique has evolved over the years to utilize less blatant force, and to include more subtle release.  I love cranial adjusting: beginning every visit with a little bit of cranial adjusting has made a profound difference in my practice.  People relax and the rest of the adjustment flows so much more easily.

9.  What else would you like people to know about chiropractic?

     I would like people to know that chiropractic is so much more than just alleviating a pain in the back.  It’s about living life to its fullest.  It’s about living healthFULLY.  It’s about being able to play with your kids or your grandkids.  It’s about being able to work in your garden in your 90′s.  It’s about being happy!
